2024 Recap: What we learned about mental health and our brains?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Introduction

2024 has been a significant year for mental health, with various advancements in mental health research, brain health, and related areas. Understanding how these studies reshape our perceptions and influence future treatments is crucial.

For instance, the 2024 Oxford Word of the Year was “brain rot,” which refers to the mental decline in cognitive abilities due to overconsumption of content, especially online media. While this term reflects the challenges people face in today’s digital age, it also highlights the promising research and solutions available to boost brain health.

At the end of the day, it is essential to prioritize and give mental health the attention it deserves.

Typing vs Writing

These days, we all prefer to use laptops or mobile devices for learning and memory or even writing. However, research has found that writing by hand beats typing for learning and memory. There is no doubt that writing by hand has logical and brain benefits. It not only increases coordination between motor and visual systems but also deeply engages the brain. Hence, it is often said that when you feel stuck, you should try using a pen and paper to write.

Keto Diet & Mental Health

Another interesting research finding this year was related to diet, specifically how the ketogenic diet impacts mental health. In 2024, it was found that this diet can help improve mood and mental well-being. Its benefits can increase over time as the metabolic effects of a keto diet help stabilize the brain.

Gut Microbes & Stress

Research on gut microbes has also shown their impact on mood. It is no surprise that what you eat impacts your mood; however, research found that diet can also make you more resilient to stress. People who handle stress better have different gut patterns, with their gut microbiomes containing more anti-inflammatory microbes and a stronger gut barrier. The gut-brain connection is not new, but understanding how the gut microbiome influences mood and stress management adds a new layer of insight.

Working Hours & Depression

The work habits of the current generation are very poor. People are working late hours, not getting enough sleep, and embracing the hustle culture, which is now seen as an attractive lifestyle. However, sacrificing sleep for work can take a toll on your mental health. Research has also found that people who work late shifts or irregular hours have a higher chance of developing depression and experiencing poor overall health.

Dementia & Daily Habits

One of the biggest mental health issues facing senior citizens is dementia, which currently has no cure. However, new research has revealed that 40% of dementia cases can be prevented or delayed by improving daily habits. Changes in sleep patterns, diet, social life, and exercise routines can help mitigate risks, even for those with genetic predispositions to dementia.

Ultra Processed Food & Poor Mental Health

A major theme in 2024 has been research into how food impacts mental health and brain function. One significant finding links highly processed food to poor mental health. As the global intake of processed foods has increased, it’s become crucial to examine how our eating habits affect brain functionality and thought processes. These studies have shown that ultra-processed foods increase the risk of cognitive decline. Past findings have also emphasized the benefits of eating healthier, more natural foods such as fruits and vegetables while avoiding processed options.

Brain Waste System & Sleep

The brain can be thought of as a working machine. The brain cells that are constantly at work produce waste as well. To stay healthy, the brain needs to wash away this everyday waste. Research in 2024 found how the brain’s waste disposal system works. This research is instrumental in understanding brain health.

This research can also be instrumental in understanding how Alzheimer’s develops. It found that sleep is important for the waste removal system, as low electrical waves during sleep push the fluid around cells. This allows the waste to be absorbed into the bloodstream, transported to the liver and kidneys, and removed from the body.

Perinatal Depression & Exercise Therapy

Perinatal depression can impact not only families but also society. While previous research has often indicated a strong relationship between physical exercise and depression, the specific impact of exercise therapy on perinatal depression varies. A meta-study examined the effects of exercise therapy as a treatment for perinatal depression. It was found that relaxation therapy had the most effective outcome in reducing perinatal depression. Following this, mind-body exercises, aerobics, and aquatic sports were also effective interventions when treating perinatal depression.

Internal Family Systems Therapy

A new form of therapy—or rather, an old form of therapy—was prominently in the news in 2024. It’s called Internal Family Systems (IFS). People who have tried this form of therapy have described it as life-changing.

An important element in IFS is called “parts work.” This concept focuses on understanding multiple parts of ourselves, much like sub-personalities. For example, one part may be the decision-maker, while another may handle emotions. The therapy involves getting to know each part, talking to them, and treating them with compassion. Research on IFS has shown promising results for addressing individual issues, couples therapy, coping with the death of a loved one, and dealing with trauma. However, more research is needed in this field to fully understand the system and its broader applications.
